Description

“Imaginary Scapes” was born after the “Borders and Paths” series, in which I experienced the pleasure of drawing deliberately irregular, almost jerky, random, and continuous lines. These line types form the basis of every drawing in Imaginary Scapes. Then, letting go of my thoughts and activating my vision, I began to fill in and characterise those lines. It’s amusing to admit that working on this felt like a kind of meditation. I don’t practice meditation yet. Not in the traditional way.

I enjoyed making spontaneous transitions from lines to shapes, and from shapes to realistic shapes, without any apparent logical sequence. I’m fascinated by the details and particulars that emerged.

Little by little, I was building natural structures, and I imagined them as floating, suspended, enormous, and surreal landscapes, with a restless, equally suspended atmosphere. You don’t know where you might be, or who or what you might find. How and why. A bit like when you’re about to fall asleep, and thoughts of all kinds emerge.

The choice of graphite pencil was dictated by the desire to have greater mastery of my hand, even when making mistakes. To have precise yet messy markings, and to play with the pressure of the pencil on the paper. To use its versatility in shading.
